Waffles are a family favorite and often are a weekend tradition. The options for topping a waffle are limitless and can please even the pickiest of eaters. While maple syrup is considered the norm, many choose to top theirs with fruit, nuts, flavored syrups, and even whipped cream.

While there are plenty of the frozen variety available that taste perfectly fine, many families prefer to make them fresh. It adds to the fun and is a great way to spend a little extra time together on the weekends. A simple homemade waffle recipe will contain some basic ingredients. Those are flour, eggs, milk, and baking powder as a leavening agent. There are plenty of variations, but most basic recipes contain those basic components. Some will add sugar, vanilla, or other spices to enhance the flavor.

If you want something a little different, you might consider a belgian waffle recipe. As the name implies, these originate from Belgium. The primary characteristics of Belgian waffles are their larger size, lighter batter and a grid pattern that is higher than in traditional waffles. They are lighter as a result of the yeast that is used as the leavening agent. While in Belgium they would likely be served with confectioners sugar, in America they are served just like a traditional American waffle.

A delicious version of the Belgium waffle is the Liege waffle. First created by the chef to the Prince Bishop of Liege in the 18th century, these waffles tend to be smaller, chewier, and sweeter than a Belgian waffle. Yeast is also used as the leavening agent, and a liege waffle recipe will call for pearl sugar. This is sugar that is larger and chunkier than granulated sugar and has a pearl-like color. It withstands higher heat than other sugars, and in a Liege waffle will caramelize on the outside enhancing the chewiness.

Which ever recipe you choose to share with your family, the tradition of cooking waffles together will be a special time that you all spend together. It is a time they will look forward and cherish. They will likely one day share it with their own families, too.
